Dr. Clyde Rivers, Honorary Ambassador at large for the Republic of Burundi said today, “I am very encouraged by the following article, congratulating Burundi on their 49th Independence Day. Burundi is indeed a country of peace and strong Christian leadership. We are working hard to let the world know they are welcome to Burundi to see there is a strong model of leadership with correct priorities in place that are leading Burundi in a healthy, safe and profitable direction. The acknowledgement of the peaceful state of Burundi and its 49th celebration of independence, by the U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, on behalf of the President of the United States, President Obama, is monumental for the Republic of Burundi. We are very thankful for our friendship with the United States of America.”

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of Burundi as you celebrate 49 years of independence this July 1. Your success in the 2010 elections and your continued efforts to build a new political culture that prioritizes peace and dialogue over conflict and violence is admirable. Throughout the African continent, you have demonstrated a commitment to stability and have become a role model for other countries. In Somalia, you are contributing to peaceful resolution through the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and many have lost their lives. As you celebrate this special day, know that the United States remains committed to continuing our history of friendship and cooperation.

Hillary Rodham Clinton
US Secretary of State
